In preparation for a move to their new location in the former police station, Milford Museum will be closing their doors temporarily. The last day to see the museum on South Walnut Street is Friday, April 17.
“While the formal date for the reopening at the new location has not been set, it is expected that the museum will be reopening in late spring,” Executive Director Tom Summers said. “Along with the Milford Museum’s move, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford will also be moving its headquarters into the same facility.”
According to Summers, the former police station, located at 400 Northwest Front Street, will serve as a Welcome Center where visitors can find information about the regional historical and environmental attractions along with details on the unique businesses in Milford.
The former police station building, constructed in 1978, was vacated by the Milford Police Department in December 2023 when a new, state-of-the-art building opened across the street. The City of Milford owns the building as well as the one the museum will vacate. Milford Museum has done extensive renovation work inside the building.
The current building used by the museum was the first post office in Milford. It came under control of the State of Delaware Department of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) in 1962, and it was used by Delaware Health and Social Services until 1982 when the Milford Museum began using it. The building was constructed in 1910. Prior to its construction, the post office operated out of homes and businesses in town.
The City of Milford leases the building from the state, but they have not announced what their plans are for the building once the museum moves to their new location.
