Milford Police Department is mourning the loss of longtime volunteer and public servant Charles Bernard Johnson Sr., affectionately known as “Butch,” whose dedication to service left a lasting impact on the city.
The Milford Police Department announced Johnson’s passing in a March 28 statement, recognizing his years of commitment as a Volunteer Senior Patrol member.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of one of our longtime Volunteer Senior Patrol Members, Charles Johnson Sr.,” the department shared in a social media post. “Charles joined our Volunteer Senior Patrol in 2008 and faithfully served as a volunteer until 2021. During his tenure with Milford PD, Charles worked countless community events, conducted thousands of city patrols and delivered countless pieces of mail for the department.”
The department described Johnson as “a man of quiet strength,” adding that his dedication to the City of Milford will be deeply missed.
“We ask that our community keep his family in your thoughts as they lay him to rest this weekend. Rest easy sir, we will take it from here.”
Johnson passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on December 6, 1948, he was known for his steady presence, servant’s heart, and deep love for his family and community.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, Johnson later worked for Suburban Propane in Georgetown and remained actively involved in his community throughout his life. He was a devoted member of Faith, Hope, and Love Christian Fellowship in Milford, where he served as Head Usher.
Outside of his service, Johnson enjoyed simple pleasures and time spent with loved ones. He had a passion for riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and was a proud member of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. Whether on the open road or gathered with family, those close to him say he found joy in connection and companionship.
Johnson married his wife, Teresa Carter, on May 12, 2012, and the couple shared a life centered on love, laughter, and everyday moments—whether dining out locally or relaxing at home with their beloved dog, Precious.
Family was at the heart of Johnson’s life. Following the loss of his daughter, Tamara Johnson, he stepped in to raise his grandson, Davonte Johnson, known as DJ, as his own. He remained deeply involved in DJ’s life, supporting his interests and ensuring he felt loved and encouraged.
Johnson is survived by his wife, Teresa Johnson; his son, Charles Johnson Jr. (Jessica); his bonus children, Kamisha Suggs and Caleisha Suggs; and his Goddaughter, Kyla Whitting. He also leaves behind multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tamara Johnson; his parents, Hobert Johnson and Virginia Harris; and several siblings and relatives who played significant roles in his life.
Friends and family gathered to honor Johnson’s life at a funeral service held March 28 at Faith, Hope, and Love Christian Fellowship in Milford. A committal service followed on March 31 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
Those who knew Johnson say his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, his years of service, and the love he shared with those around him.
“Charles will be remembered for his steady presence, his servant’s heart, and the love he poured into his family,” his family shared.
