Gov. Matt Meyer has officially designated May 17-23 as Delaware Grown Week, recognizing the importance of agriculture and local food producers throughout the First State as farmers markets and roadside stands enter the busy spring and summer season.
In a statewide proclamation, Meyer highlighted the role agriculture continues to play in Delaware’s economy and local communities.
“Agriculture is Delaware’s number one industry, and our family farms play a vital role in the prosperity of the state’s economy, communities, and environment,” Meyer said in the proclamation. “We extend our sincere gratitude to Delaware’s farm families, farm workers, community organizations, and agriculture companies for their hard work, dedication, and vital role in feeding our communities.”
The recognition comes as farmers markets across Delaware continue seeing strong public support. State officials reported that registered Delaware farmers markets surpassed $5 million in sales for the first time during the 2025 season, reflecting growing interest in locally grown food, farm products, and handmade goods.
One of the most popular markets in southern Delaware is the Riverwalk Farmers Market in downtown Milford. The seasonal market, which operates Saturdays from May through early December along the Mispillion Riverwalk, is recognized as the longest-running farmers market in Delaware and attracts hundreds of shoppers weekly.
The market features a rotating mix of local farms, food producers, seafood vendors, bakeries, and artisans. Vendors frequently include Nash Veggies, Cosmic Dog Farms, Kerr Acres Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms, local baked goods sellers, handmade craft vendors, specialty food producers, and fresh produce growers from across Delmarva.
Organizers say the market has evolved from a small gathering of farmers selling produce from pickup trucks into one of the area’s most significant weekly community events. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, shoppers can often find flowers, soaps, baked sweets, honey, handmade crafts, and specialty products.
The Riverwalk Farmers Market is also part of Downtown Milford Inc.’s ongoing revitalization efforts aimed at bringing visitors into the downtown district while supporting local agriculture and small businesses. Market organizers estimate the event brings hundreds of visitors into downtown Milford each week during the growing season.
State officials encourage residents to support local agriculture not only during Delaware Grown Week, but throughout the year by shopping at farmers markets, visiting farm stands, and purchasing locally grown products.
