After the second time no one filed to run for the Ward 3 seat vacated by Michael Stewart in May, the City of Milford has scheduled another special election for Saturday, July 25. Anyone who lives in Ward 3 is eligible to run for council as long as they have resided within the ward for one year. Renters and property owners can serve on council. In addition, the age limit to run is 18 which means younger adults are also eligible to run.
“The filing deadline would be July 2, 2026,” City Clerk Katrina White said. “We will be posting a solicitation of candidates that will go out this week.”
Councilman Jason James asked what the procedure was should no one file for the seat again. City Solicitor Greg Morris stated that council can only appoint someone to the seat if it is for a term of less than 12 months.
“This is for more than 12 months, so the city needs to get the word out there that they need someone to apply for this position,” Morris said.
James asked if there was a set period that the city had to hold another election if there was not a candidate for the third time.
“There’s certain requirements, like you have to do things so many days before the election,” Morris said. “But you don’t have to wait an enormous amount of time. We would want, hopefully, to get it back on the table, get the notice out to the public and let them know there is a desperate need to have someone fill that chair down there.”
The solicitation for candidates had not been released by press time. Once it is released, information on where candidates must file, the deadline for registering to vote and times of polling will be shared.
