The railroad arriving in Delaware, roots literacy and language for children plus the first in a series on the history of book banning are all on the agenda at the Milford Public Library. These are just three of the activities planned this week.
On Saturday, May 9 at 1 PM, join the Milford Museum as they present “The Railroad Comes to Delaware,” focusing on the arrival of the railroad during the 19th century. The program is presented by Doug Poore who has authored books on the subject. It is part of the monthly Milford Museum American History series.
The same day, children can create Mother’s Day Pots & Planters starting at 11 AM. Children will decorate a plastic pot and plant flower seeds. All supplies are provided and there is no registration required, but the program is only while supplies last.
On Monday, May 11 at 10:30 AM, the Office of Manufactured Housing Ombudsperson will host a free, informational presentation on the Lot Rental Assistance Program and the Limited Lot Rental Assistance Program. The program is designed to help homeowner-tenants on leased land afford lot rent.
The same day at 4:30 PM, the Cookbook Club meets with recipes from Boheme Cooking. Each month, the group selects a cookbook, and each participant selects a receipe to prepare and share at the following meeting. Stop by the Circulation Desk to register and choose a recipe which the library will provide.
The first in a series on the history of book banning will also take place on Monday, May 11 at 4 PM. This session is on 18th century book banning and will review how ideas around print, copyright and censorship changed during the Enlightenment.
Tuesday, May 12 at 3 PM, children can make an egg carton garden. Each child is given an egg carton to plant seeds to start a small garden. This is another only while supplies last, but all supplies are provided.
The Teens Writer Workshop is planned for Wednesday, May 13 at 4 PM as they focus on their latest creation while brainstorming with fellow writers. Refreshments are provided. The library reminds teens that although they love the liveliness of the Teen Center, they kindly ask teens who are in the center but not participating in this activity to be mindful of noise levels so that writers can focus.
At 3 PM on Thursday, May 14, celebrate Chocolate Chip Cookie Day a day early with a cookie tournament. Teens will taste an array of chocolate chip cookies and decide which is the best cookie in Milford. Gluten free options and vegan milk will also be available.
Roots Literacy and Language Activity Night is planned for Thursday, May 14 at 5:30 PM. This program is in partnership with Nemours and Polytech Parents as Teachers. It is a night of literacy and language learning. Each month, the program inspires a love of learning, reading and social skills.
