Milford School District Board of Education approved 21 policy changes at their recent board meeting. In addition, 13 additional changes were listed on the agenda as a “first read.” The first read policies were for board members to read and discuss, while the “second read” policies were presented for approval.
“We do provide opportunities for our district staff to attend committee meetings through three different departments,” Superintendent Travis Moorman said. “We focus on operations, we focus on personnel, human resources and instruction and students through those three particular categories. Some of these are presented as first reads due to board meeting cancellations over the last month, but we are getting back on track.”
Two of the first reads were policies recommended for deletion, including Policy 1008 – Required Compliance of Laws Governing the Use of Seatbelt Devices While Driving and 4421 – Copyright Compliance. Both were recommended for deletion as they were matters of law and did not need to be part of the district personnel policy.
Other first read changes as well as many of the approved changes were grammatical and wording adjustments that did not change the policy significantly. All policies that were introduced at the meeting as well as those approved can be found on the district website.
“I just want o thank the board for your patience,” Moorman said. “I know there’s been a lot of policies that have come through for your review. That was one of the first things coming on board as the superintendent, I recognized the need for many of our policies to be reviewed. I know it is not easy when we pile up over almost 40 policies at one time as we kind of start to pare these down and align policies with practices.”
Moorman felt that the board should see a reduction in the length of the policy manual.
The changes to district policy were approved unanimously.
