Walnut Street will come alive with music, dance, food and cultural traditions when Downtown Milford Inc. hosts a Multicultural Festival during First Friday on Aug. 7.
The free event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Milford and will feature live performances, food trucks, artisan vendors and activities celebrating the many cultures that make up the Milford community.
“Milford is a town filled with so many cultures,” said Sade Truiett, Downtown Milford Executive Director. “This event is designed to highlight as many of those cultures as we can. We are excited to bring some new entertainment to our First Friday event this month thanks to a generous sponsorship from Highmark.”
Over the years, Milford has grown into one of central Delaware’s most diverse communities.
Families from a variety of backgrounds have chosen to make Milford home, contributing to the city’s neighborhoods, businesses, schools, churches and civic organizations. The festival is intended to recognize that diversity while creating an opportunity for residents and visitors to learn more about one another through music, food and cultural traditions.
Throughout the evening, visitors can enjoy performances representing a variety of cultures found within the Milford area, including drumming groups, dancers and other live entertainment.
Organizers are also encouraging attendees to celebrate their own heritage by wearing clothing or colors that reflect their family’s traditions.
“We would love to see people at the event representing their own culture,” Truiett said. “Come in your kilt and tartan plaid. Wear your tribal clothing or don a T-shirt displaying the culture of your choice! This is a great way to celebrate your own heritage.”
In addition to the entertainment, a variety of food trucks will offer diverse menu selections while local artisans and small businesses will showcase handmade goods and merchandise in the Artisan Market, located in the same area as the weekly Riverwalk Farmers Market.
Downtown Milford Inc. hopes the event will not only celebrate the community’s cultural richness but also strengthen the connections that make Milford unique.
“Our goal is to create a welcoming event where people can share traditions, experience something new and enjoy spending time together,” Truiett said. “When neighbors learn more about one another, it helps build a stronger community.”
