Towns all over the state will be celebrating America’s 250th anniversary this week. Fireworks, laser light shows and drone displays are planned throughout the area.
Events begin July 2 when “Stars over Sussex,” an event planned by Sussex County Land Trust, takes place at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal. The event begins at 5 PM with Fleetwood Macked, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band and ends with a drone and fireworks show that evening. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Sussex County Land Trust website, but the show will also be visible from Lewes Beach, Grain On the Rocks and surrounding waterfront areas.
On Friday, July 3, Downtown Milford Inc. will hold their 250th Celebration Picnic in the Park starting at 5 PM in Bicentennial Park. There will be vendors, food trucks and entertainment by Mike Hines and the Look. The evening ends with a laser light show that is pet and PTSD-friendly. The event is free to attend and everyone is invited to bring chairs to enjoy the music and light show. The light show is anticipated to begin around 9 PM. Donations are still welcome to cover the cost of the light show.
Go Fourth Lewes is planned for Saturday, July 4 with their annual fireworks on the beach. The fireworks are the finale for Lewes’ Old Fashioned Fourth of July festivities which includes games on Second Street, a boat parade on the canal as well as the Lewes Do Dah Parade.
Milton will hold their “Bringing Mayberry Back to Milton” community festival in Milton Memorial Park on Saturday, July 4 from 1 AM to 2 PM. The event includes old-fashioned games, dunk tank, water balloon fights, sack races, food and the popular cake wheel. There is a Patriotic Bike Parade where children under 12 can decorate their bicycles and win a prize. Although there are no fireworks, this is a fun, family-friendly event.
Of course, there will be a huge celebration on July 4 in Delaware’s capital city. A parade, live entertainment, food vendors and a large fireworks display are planned in Dover. Festivities begin at 9 AM at Legislative Mall and include a Founding Father Costume Contest at the John Bell House on The Green at noon, a Revolutionary Dover tour sponsored by First State Heritage Park, and ending with a grand firework spectacular.
The weather for Friday and Saturday is predicted to be extremely warm, so celebrators need to have plenty of water, cooling mechanisms and plans to get out of the heat as much as possible. With fireworks, laser and drone shows planned in the evening, the weather will likely be cooler for those events.
