The Sussex Technical School District Board of Education has selected Dr. Jason Peel as the district’s next superintendent, approving his appointment during its July 1 meeting.
Peel, who brings more than 20 years of experience in education, will officially assume the role on Sept. 1, succeeding Dr. Kevin Carson, who retired in April.
A familiar face in Delaware education, Peel has served in a variety of leadership positions throughout Sussex and Kent counties, including several years with the Milford School District, where he served as Director of Secondary Education before becoming the district’s Director of Human Resources and School Climate, overseeing human resources operations while helping shape school culture and employee relations.
Peel’s connection to Sussex Tech spans nearly two decades. He first joined the district in 2008 as an assistant principal after serving in the same role at Sussex Central High School beginning in 2006. During his first tenure at Sussex Tech, he was promoted to Supervisor of Support Services before leaving in 2012 to become principal at Polytech High School.
Following his leadership roles at Polytech and Milford, Peel returned to Sussex Tech in 2023 as Director of Human Resources and Support Services. He applied for the superintendent’s position following Carson’s retirement earlier this year.
“I am honored for the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of the Sussex County Vocational Technical School District,” Peel said. “I look forward to working alongside our students, staff, families, and community partners to continue preparing students for successful futures.”
Peel began his career in education as a Spanish teacher in North Carolina, teaching at both the high school and college levels before advancing into school administration. He later relocated to Delaware, where he has held leadership positions across multiple school districts.
His educational credentials include a Doctor of Education in Policy and Administration from the University of Delaware, a Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Middlebury College, and a Bachelor of Arts from Elon University.
District officials said Peel’s experience in classroom instruction, school leadership, human resources and district administration made him well qualified to lead Sussex Tech as it continues its mission of preparing students for college, careers and the skilled workforce.
Peel will officially begin serving as superintendent on Sept. 1.
