At a recent meeting, Milford School District Board of Education approved changes to the 2026-27 calendar. The board approved the calendar in April, but Superintendent Travis Moorman explained that staff had discovered a few dates that needed adjustment.
“We appreciate the school board acting in advance to approve our school calendar; however, we do have a few revisions we would like to request,” Moorman said. “What we are focusing on are the months of May and June for 2027 specifically.”
In the revised calendar, May 11 would be a professional development day with no students.
“This is the second Tuesday in May which is, by law, school board election day,” Moorman said. “I received multiple calls from concerned community members regarding school safety and security on this particular day. I would be remiss to disagree with them, because it does make a lot of sense since we spend a significant amount of time and resources securing our schools for student safety.”
Moorman pointed out that on school board election day, the doors to schools were unlocked and the community permitted to come in and vote. Although there had never been any challenges in the past, Moorman felt that it would be better to be proactive instead of reactive. The request was to turn May 11, 2027, into a non-student day with staff still required to report.
“The next change would be in June,” Moorman said. “We’re asking to make the last student day, June 11, a half day rather than a full day for students. The main reason behind this is that we are under some contractual obligations to give our classroom teachers time to complete their report cards and average grades, then put out the reports, make them available for students and parents.”
Moorman stated that it was difficult to do that with a full day with students on the last day of school.
“If you look at the end of every marking period, we always have an Inservice day where teachers are allocated time in order to get report cards completed and have everything ready to issue to families,” Moorman said. “It has been a struggle to provide this time to our staff at the end of the school year, so a solution to this problem would be to make the last student day of the year a half day.”
School board member Jennifer Masotti made a motion to approve the changes and member Yanelle Powell seconded. The motion carried by a vote of 6 to 0 as member Victor “Butch” Elzey was not present.
