The Milford community is mourning the loss of The Honorable Loretta L. Wootten, a longtime public servant and community leader who passed away peacefully at her home on April 10, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Wootten, a Milford native, dedicated decades of her life to public service at both the state and county levels. Over the course of her career, she held several key roles, including serving as Register in Chancery—becoming the first woman in Delaware to hold that position—and later as Kent County Clerk of the Peace for three consecutive terms.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Wootten was widely known for her deep commitment to her community. She volunteered with numerous organizations, supported political campaigns at the local and national level, and remained active in civic life for more than 40 years. Friends and family remember her as a compassionate and dedicated individual who was always willing to help others.
In the days following her passing, tributes from friends and community members highlighted the personal impact she had on those around her.
“Loretta was such a great lady and a dear friend,” one friend shared. “Her daughters are good friends of mine. I got to visit a couple times before she passed and so glad I got to see her.”
Another message reflected on her warmth and lasting impression.
“In loving memory of Mommom. She had such a warm and loving presence. I’m glad I had a chance to meet her, even for a short time. She will always be remembered with love,” Nong wrote.
Others remembered her personality and kindness.
“Lovely individual. Will miss her wit,” said Will Lindewirth.
Brenda Wyatt offered condolences to the family.
“My sincere condolences to the Wootten family on Loretta’s passing,” Brenda wrote.
Wootten is survived by her daughters, Donna Stanley and Brenda Wootten, as well as her grandchildren and extended family.
Services are scheduled for April 18 from 10 AM to 1 PM at Lighthouse Christian Center in Milford. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM at the church with burial to follow in Frederica .
Her legacy of public service, community involvement, and compassion continues to resonate throughout the region.
