Wanda L. Howell passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at home and surrounded by her beloved family. She was 86.
Born an raised in Milford, Wanda was the daughter of the late Lester A. and Jeanette Emory Tingle. A proud graduate of Milford High School, she was well known throughout the community from a young age. In 1957, she was honored as a runner-up In the Miss Milford pageant, a reflection of her grace, kindness and radiant smile that would become her trademark throughout life.
Believing that life was meant to be spent serving others, Wanda served as the head cashier at ACME Market in Milford for 26 years before continuing her calling with Catholic Charities, where she faithfully served families in need for another 17 years. She retired at the remarkable age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity and selfless service.
To know Wanda was to love her. She was the heart of her family, the one who held everyone together. She worried about everyone, checked on everyone and made sure those she loved always knew they had someone in their corner. Whether it was a phone call to make sure someone got home safely, opening her home to family, offering a warm meal or simply listening without judgment, Wanda made everyone feel loved, welcomed and important. He family wasn’t just a part of her life; it was her greatest purpose.
Known for her infectious smile, Wanda had a heart of gold. She never met a stranger and found happiness in helping others however she could. She was a devoted member of the Milford Elks Lodge #2401, serving on several committees throughout the years. The Needy Family Committee was especially near and dear to her heart and she looked forward each year to helping families during difficult times. She also loved crocheting blankets, many of which she generously gave away to those who needed warmth and comfort.
Wanda found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She treasured trips to Dairy Queen for her favorite ice cream, time spent surrounded by family and friends, and the countless memories created through everyday moments. Her laughter, caring spirit, and unwavering love made holidays, family gatherings, and ordinary days feel extraordinary.
She is lovingly survived by her sons, Glenn Howell and his wife, Suzanne Moore, and Mark “Maytag” Howell and his wife, Shellie McKinney; her brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Bonnie Howell; her sisters, Linda Grabowski, Rita Clendaniel, and Juanita Adams and her husband, Martin; her cherished grandchildren, Madison Howell, Alicia Howell, Nichole Howell, Elizabeth Howell, and Paige Howell; and her adored great-grandchildren, Amoura Smith, Amari Smith, Xavier Ennis, and Alexis Ennis. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who were blessed to know her.
In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard “Dutch” Howell, and her daughters, Sandra Renee Howell and Connie Howell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Needy Family Fund, c/o Milford Elks Lodge, 18951 Elks Lodge Road, Milford, DE 19963, in honor of Wanda’s lifelong commitment to helping others.

Wanda’s legacy will live on through the many lives she touched. She was the heart of her family, a source of strength and love, and a woman whose kindness extended far beyond her own home. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the memories she created will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
