In December, Wolfington Body Company informed KSI that it was donating a 2024 Ford E-450 Shuttle Glaval Bus to support KSI’s transportation fleet. Valued at $114,692, the bus accommodates 12 seated passengers and two wheelchair transports.
Wolfington annually provides charitable contributions to service organizations, including vehicle donations. According to Wolfington’s Milford Sales Manager Stephanie Hoffmeier, the company was looking for a local nonprofit that would utilize a low-mileage bus to benefit deserving communities. An inquiry to the DE Department of Education targeted KSI as an ideal organization to make use of a high-quality transport.
Wolfington opened in 1876 in a converted feed store on North 20th Street in Philadelphia. It was there that Alexander J. Wolfington built the first carriage, a “buggy” with such durability, it held up under the heavy use of doctors traveling on their rounds. During the 1890’s, Wolfington was called upon to build the ultimate carriage, the Brougham, a private, four-wheeled, closed carriage drawn by a single horse and driven by a coachman. This gave Wolfington a national reputation for quality. It was during that decade that Wolfington and his son, Harry, entered the motorized transportation era, adding bodies to bare chassis with individualized touches for practicality, safety and comfort.
The business was turned over to Harry in 1910 who knew the future was in motorized vehicles. That year, the company was awarded contracts from Stutz, Packard, Pierce-Arrow and Cadillac, many bearing the sign “body by Wolfington.”
Since that humble beginning, Wolfington Body Company has been providing school and commercial bus sales, service, transportation, and parts for 150 years. The company provides bus distribution and service throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
KSI’s transportation fleet of vans and busses travels hundreds of thousands of miles annually to provide safe transport for many of its more than 200 participants between home and varied opportunities to benefit them.
