A Milford man has been convicted on all charges connected to a violent attempted murder attack that left a woman with life-threatening injuries in November 2024.
A Delaware Superior Court jury found 39-year-old Derrick Legree guilty on May 12, 2026, of Attempted Murder First Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited, Aggravated Menacing, Breach of Conditions of Bond During Commitment, and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
The charges stem from a domestic-related stabbing and assault that occurred on Nov. 3, 2024, at the Brightway Commons apartment complex on Tull Way in Milford.
According to prosecutors, Legree repeatedly beat the female victim before attacking her with both a liquor bottle and a knife. The assault caused severe injuries that required extensive hospitalization and surgery for the victim to survive.
Milford Police responded to the scene at approximately 9:49 p.m. and rendered first aid to the victim before she was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition.
Legree fled the area before officers arrived. Following an extensive search, he was taken into custody in Philadelphia on Nov. 25, 2024, by the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force. He was later extradited back to Delaware with assistance from the Delaware Department of Justice.
Following his extradition, Legree was formally charged with multiple felony offenses, including attempted murder and weapons-related charges. Authorities said he was held at Sussex Correctional Institution on more than $647,000 cash bond, including an active violation of probation warrant.
Attorney General Kathy Jennings praised prosecutors and law enforcement officials following the conviction.
“Our DOJ trial team and law enforcement partners did tremendous work in obtaining these guilty verdicts,” Jennings said. “It is nothing short of a miracle that the victim survived, and her bravery will help ensure that the defendant will never be able to hurt anyone again.”
Police initially asked the public for assistance locating Legree shortly after the attack, warning residents not to approach him due to the seriousness of the charges.
The case was prosecuted by the Delaware Department of Justice in partnership with local law enforcement agencies.
Legree is currently scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 10, 2026. He faces the possibility of significant prison time as a result of the convictions.
