For the third time, the City of Milford has announced a special election to fill the Ward 3 seat vacated in May when Michael Stewart chose not to run for re-election. No one registered as a candidate in two previous special elections by the deadline.
“The special election for Ward 3 will be on Saturday, September 26 from 10 AM to 6 PM,” City Clerk Katrina White said at a recent council meeting. “The deadline for anyone interested in running for Ward 3 will be September 16 by 4:30 PM. For voter registration, you must be registered by September 16 at 4:30 PM to be able to vote in that special election.”
White explained that anyone who is interested in running for Ward Three, contact the clerk’s office, and they will set up a time to come in and get the necessary paperwork. Anyone 18 or older who has lived in Ward 3 for more than one year is eligible to run for the council seat. Property ownership is not required which means renters are eligible to file to run.
Candidates must complete a nominating petition signed by not less than ten registered voters in the City of Milford. Petitions, along with a Statement of Eligibility Requirements and Acknowledgement of Candidacy and Receipt of Documents must be filed in the City Clerk’s Office for confirmation in accordance with the filing deadline date indicated.
Any individual who is at least 18 years of age and is registered to vote in the State of Delaware who reside in Ward 3 is eligible to vote. Non-resident property owners who are eligible to vote must have registered through the City of Milford. Any non-resident property owner who has property in more than one ward, must declare on or before Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 4:30 PM, the ward they wish to vote in on election day.
Residents who need to register to vote must contact the Department of Elections – Sussex County Office at 302-856-5367. Registration can also be completed online.
Only voters registered in the State of Delaware residing within Ward 3 or eligible non-resident property owners whose property is deeded in their individual name and has registered through Milford City Hall will be permitted to vote in the upcoming election.
Those wishing to vote by absentee ballot can be placed on a list by contacting the City Clerk’s Office by calling 302-422-1111, Extension 1300 or Extension 1142.
