Leaders from Bayhealth recently shared their vision for expanding access to high-quality health care across Sussex County during a series of community presentations hosted by the Bayhealth Foundation.
The presentations, held in March, brought together residents, business leaders and regional stakeholders to discuss the health system’s long-term strategy for meeting the needs of Delaware’s rapidly growing population.
On March 5, Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy addressed residents of the Peninsula Lakes community, outlining plans to strengthen care delivery in southern Delaware. Later in the month, on March 27, Executive Vice President and COO Kyle Benoit presented at a meeting of the Sussex Economic Development Action Committee in Georgetown, where he highlighted upcoming projects and investments.
Central to the plan is continued expansion at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus. Leaders detailed plans for a new medical office building that will house specialty services, along with future enhancements including an expanded intensive care unit, relocation of dialysis services and the addition of an interventional radiology suite.
Growth is also underway at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus through the health system’s multi-year initiative known as “The Next Wave.” The project includes construction of a 10-story patient tower featuring 64 private inpatient rooms designed to improve patient comfort and outcomes. Additional upgrades include expanded emergency and intensive care departments, as well as the relocation of pharmacy and laboratory services to improve operational efficiency. Plans also call for enhancements to dining areas for patients, visitors and staff.
Beyond physical expansion, Bayhealth leaders emphasized investments in medical education and workforce development. Through academic partnerships, the system is increasing opportunities for medical students, residents and fellows, with the goal of strengthening Delaware’s pipeline of health care providers and improving long-term clinician retention.
“Across Kent and Sussex counties, we’re growing with purpose and doing so by expanding access to care in ways that directly respond to the needs of a rapidly growing and aging population,” Murphy said. “This isn’t growth for growth’s sake — it’s thoughtful, strategic expansion designed to ensure our neighbors have access to high-quality care close to home.”
Bayhealth officials said the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment as a nonprofit health system to reinvest resources into the communities it serves. Additional details about ongoing and future projects are available through the health system’s Next Wave campaign.
