The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware (DSADE) will mark a decade of progress in specialized care while honoring local advocates and supporters during its third annual “A Night Under the Stars” Gala on Saturday, April 25.
The event, scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Chesapeake Inn Restaurant & Marina, will celebrate milestones in care and community impact while raising funds to support DSADE programming.
A highlight of this year’s gala is the recognition of the 10th anniversary of the ChristianaCare Adult Down Syndrome Program, part of the Center for Special Health Care Needs. Led by Dr. Mary Stephens, the program provides coordinated, personalized care for adults with Down syndrome, addressing complex health needs in a centralized setting. Organizers say the program has become a vital resource for individuals and families across Delaware.
Stephens will be honored as Advocate of the Year for her leadership and contributions to improving care and access for adults with Down syndrome.
The gala will also recognize Delaware Dreams as Community Partner of the Year. The private foundation has supported DSADE initiatives for five years, including funding summer camp programs and contributing to the organization’s Adopt a Family program, which provides gifts and assistance to families in need.
In addition, the organization will present its Legacy Volunteer Recognition to Zachary Jones, whose impact continues to be felt years after his passing in 2021. Jones, who was pursuing an MD/PhD at Vanderbilt University, was remembered for his dedication as a camp counselor at DSADE’s Days of Summer Camp. Known for his compassion and generosity, he left a lasting impression on campers and fellow volunteers alike.
His legacy continues through the Zachary Jones Foundation, established by family and friends to carry forward his mission of supporting children and families. Since 2023, the foundation has contributed funding to the very camp where Jones once volunteered.
Organizers say the gala not only celebrates individual achievements but also highlights the broader mission of supporting Delawareans with Down syndrome through advocacy, education, and community programs.
The event is made possible through the support of sponsors including Precision Wealth Partners, Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, Incyte, M. Davis & Sons, and The Precisionists.
DSADE officials encourage community members and media to attend, noting that the evening will offer opportunities to hear personal stories, connect with local advocates, and learn more about ongoing efforts to enhance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome throughout the state.
