Last season the Milford Central Academy did not lose a lacrosse game, but they didn’t win one either. You actually have to play games to get results. After a year of no Middle School lacrosse, Milford recently named Tim “T.J.” Millman as their head coach. On Tuesday, March 24th, this young squad took to the practice field for the first time after missing the entire 2025 season. Make no mistake about it, this season will not be measured in wins and losses, it will be measured in attitude and spirit.
“We have 15 players on the team, most of them have never even picked up a lacrosse stick before,” Millman said. “Lacrosse is one of those sports that just doesn’t easily translate to other sports, just because of using sticks. Think about it, you’re not throwing and catching a ball with your hands, you are doing so with a stick. For most of our guys, this is completely new.”
The 2010 Milford graduate and three time letter man, Millman has one mission, to teach the game of lacrosse to students who will hopefully be part of the high school program in the future.
“You have to start somewhere, while we have a couple of students that have experience, our first practice was the first time the majority of the team ever picked up a lacrosse stick,” Millman said. “That’s fine though, what I do have is a group of committed athletes who are going to get better as the season goes on.”
Millman was an assistant coach on the JV squad from 2011-2013. He has also coached the 1787 travel team. He last coached as an assistant for Woodbridge in 2019. While Millman’s resume may not jump off the page to the casual observer, there is much more to who he is than a person acting as a placeholder. Millman is committed to the Buccaneer program and looking forward to building up the program for the future.
“I am very lucky that I have the opportunity to do this. I have always enjoyed teaching sports, so I’m hoping this is going to be as much fun for them as it will be for me. We haven’t even had enough practices to take the field yet, but we will. Then the players will get the feel for what the game is like at full speed. We are not going out there to lose, but we have to be realistic about our expectations, we are going out there to learn and have fun and to make athletes into lacrosse players.” Millman said.
Millman has had a lot of help from the high school team as well. Along with head coach Blake Faulkner, even some of the varsity players have been coming over to lend a hand.
“It’s important, because nobody does something like this alone and I am lucky enough to have support of the Milford family,” Millman stated. “Every time I have asked for something, the help has been right there, from assistance to equipment everyone is chipping in.”
On a personal note, I have known Millman since he was a freshman in high school. He is smart, funny and a leader. I believe that this places the Milford program in good hands, just by the character he brings to his position.
A graduate of the University of Delaware, Millman is a contract employee for BridgePhase, currently doing work for the Department of Homeland Security. He lives in Milton with his wife Emily, his daughter Finnley and son Timothy.
