Adults, teens and children will find fun and educational programs at the Milford Public Library. Whether you want to learn something new or just enjoy a few hours out with others, the library has something to fit your needs.
“From January 27 through April 14, we will offer free tax preparation with Nehemiah Gateway CDC for those whose household income is $69,000 or less,” Leah Rosell, Executive Director of the library said. “You have to make an appointment, but it is a great way to take care of your taxes for free.”
Regular programs will continue, including Chair Yoga every Monday and Wednesday at 3:15 PM and Crafts and Coffee which is held on the first Monday of every month. The Cookbook Club meets on Monday, February 9. Be sure to stop at the circulation desk to choose the recipe you will make for the event which features “A Very Chinese Cookbook.” Valentine Bingo is planned for Tuesday, January 10 at 10 AM.
“Milford Museum will hold their American History Series on Saturday February 14 which will feature the Red Ball Express,” Rosell said. “On Wednesday, February 18, at 5 PM, we will screen a film that celebrates black history, culture and education. We provide the popcorn and we will announce the title soon!”
Create plastic mats for the homeless from plastic bags on Thursday, February 19 at 3 PM and, on Saturday, February 28 at 10:30 AM, create St. Patrick’s Day cards.
“On Friday, February 6 at 1 PM, the Children’s Home School Hour will feature the art of printmaking with Ms. Maddy,” Rosell said. “All day Monday, February 9, we will celebrate black history with crafts, games and movies. The movies are “Soul” by Pixar and “The Color of Friendship” by Disney. While adults play Valentine Bingo, the children can also play on Tuesday, February 10.”
Weekly story time continues every Thursday at 10:30 AM and, on February 17 at 3 PM, children can create a Lunar New Year card. They choose between a lantern, decorative fan or a special decoration to celebrate the year of the horse.
“In partnership with Nemours and Polytech Parents as Teachers, the library will present Roots Literacy and Language Activity Night on Wednesday, February 18 at 5:30 PM,” Rosell said. “This is a monthly series that is designed to inspire a love of learning, reading and social skills. Each month features a different them, books and activities.”
All day Saturday, February 21 at 5:30 PM, children can create Perler Bead keychains. Each child will get a board to arrange different colored beads in a pattern of their choice and then will press the beads with an iron to fuse them. Rosell reminds parents that small beads may not be suitable for very young children. On February 24 at 5:30 PM, children can enjoy the LEGO Club which is for children six and older.
“Of course, we never forget our teens when we plan programs,” Rosell said. “On Friday, February 6 at 1 PM, the Teen Home School Hour will feature scratch off Valentine’s cards. We continue the card theme with Cards and Ice Cream on Saturday, February 7 at Noon. This is a dual program to celebrate both National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and National Send a Card to a Friend Day!”
On Tuesday, February 10 at 5 PM, teens can create candy sushi with all materials provided. Rosell reminded teens to let the library know of any food allergies. On Wednesday, February 11 at 4 PM, the monthly Writer Workshop is planned.
“This event is particularly fun,” Rosell said. “Speed Date a Book, planned for Thursday, February 12 at 4 PM, will help teens find their next winter read. They will read a book for five minutes and, when the timer goes off, move on to the next candidate. At the end of the event, they can check out their favorites.”
Karen Barner from Elegant Styles will teach a Braiding 101 class for teens. During the class, teens will learn the basics of braiding, proper care of braids, the best styling products and more. Pizza and Paperbacks is planned for Thursday, February 19 at 4 PM while teens can create their own Polar Bear Soap on Friday, February 27 at 3 PM.
“We will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pokemon with a party on February 28 at Noon,” Rosell said. “Trainers will play games, earn badges, trade cards, make Pokemon themed crafts, enjoy tasty food and more. There will be prizes and the winners of the Pokemon Scavenger Hunt will be announced.”
Milford Public Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 AM to 7 PM; Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM; Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM and closed on Sunday. They will be closed Monday, February 16 to celebrate President’s Day. The library is located at 11 Southeast Front Street in Milford.
