On Friday, September 4, downtown was filled with visitors and residents celebrating the return to school. The event is provided by Downtown Milford Inc. and designed to bring the community out to see what downtown Milford has to offer.
“This is our next to last First Friday for the season and we wanted to make it special,” Sade Truiett, Executive Director of Downtown Milford Inc., said. “We gave away over 600 backpacks with school supplies to help get children off to the right start.”
In addition to the many offerings in downtown, those who attended were provided a concert by Amillion Mayfield, international basketball player, hip hop star, poet and mentor. Amillion travels the country giving inspirational speeches to young people, encouraging them to live their dreams as he has been able to do.
“I’ve had the pleasure to travel Delaware and the world with my poetry and rap,” Mayfield said at an event at Milford Central Academy earlier this year. “I started as an overseas basketball player but now I am living my professional dream. You can do that too.”
Those who attended the monthly event thanked Downtown Milford Inc. for providing family entertainment.
“Thank you, Downtown Milford Inc., for putting on a great back-to-school First Friday event in downtown Milford,” Representative Bryan Shupe said. “Our family had so much fun spending the evening together and seeing so many families and neighbors out enjoying our downtown.”
The City of Milford commented “way to show up, Milford!” on their social media.
“First Fridays in Milford are always great, but last nights was really special,” Joshua Pennington said. ‘I had a lot of fun speaking and spending time with local organizations, fellow candidates and residents who make the City of Milford shine. There were live performances from amazing Delaware artists, backpack giveaways for students and we ended the night by dancing to our favorite songs. Truly a night to remember and a great kickoff to the school year.”
The next First Friday is October 2 from 5 to 8 PM and the theme will be “FIESTA!” in honor of National Hispanic Month. Vendor spaces are still available and the application can be found here. Sponsorships are also available and information can be found here.
“This is becoming one of our biggest First Friday events,” Truiett said. “Sponsorships are a great way to get your company name out to even more people who may not realize what you offer.”
