Bird enthusiasts will once again have the opportunity to observe one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most significant nesting colonies of Brown Pelicans as the 2026 Smith Island Pelican Tours prepare to launch in July.
Organizers have announced 10 tour dates between July 14 and July 31, offering participants a rare chance to view the nesting colony near the jetties outside the Village of Ewell. The tours, which cost $355 per person, require a minimum of 12 participants to operate and are limited to 18 guests per trip.
According to organizers, recent observations indicate the pelican colony is progressing as expected. During a June 5 site visit, a Smith Island skiff captain reported numerous active nests located near the shoreline, with the first hatchlings expected to emerge in mid-June. Young pelicans are anticipated to be highly visible throughout July and August as they develop their distinctive white down feathers before fledging approximately 10 to 12 weeks after hatching.
The tours are timed around daily high tides, allowing skiffs to safely approach the nesting area. Participants remain in boats throughout the excursion to minimize disturbance to the birds while still providing close viewing opportunities.
The 2026 tour team will feature returning charter captain Allen Parks aboard the Elizabeth Joy II, along with First Mate Barry Chew and skiff captains Eddie Corbin, Mark Kitching and Craig Evans. Lunch will be provided at the Drum Point Market & Eatery in Ewell.
Interest in several July dates is already building. As of June 10, the July 14, July 17 and July 27 tours each need just two additional participants to meet the minimum requirement. Other dates still require between three and 12 additional registrants before registration can officially open.
Organizers said increased fuel costs contributed to a $10 increase in the tour fee compared to 2025.
Tours are offered weekdays only because of limited dock space on Smith Island. Once a date reaches the 12-person minimum, registration will open for participants on the interest list.
Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to email [email protected] with their name, phone number, group size and preferred tour dates. Organizers recommend listing multiple date options to improve the likelihood of securing a spot.
Current tour dates are scheduled for July 14-17 and July 27-31, with additional August tours possible depending on colony activity and participant interest.
