Bayhealth Medical Group has expanded its cancer care services with the addition of Dr. Amani Jambhekar, a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist who will serve as Medical Director of the Bayhealth Breast & Surgical Oncology Program at the Sussex Campus.
Dr. Jambhekar brings specialized expertise in the surgical treatment of breast cancer and melanoma, strengthening Bayhealth’s efforts to provide comprehensive cancer care for patients in central and southern Delaware.
She specializes in the full range of breast surgical oncology procedures, including skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomies, oncoplastic and hidden-scar lumpectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of benign breast conditions.
Bayhealth officials said she incorporates the latest surgical techniques and technology to improve patient outcomes while emphasizing comprehensive post-operative pain management.
As part of the Bayhealth Cancer Institute, Dr. Jambhekar will work alongside a multidisciplinary team that provides genetic counseling, high-risk breast cancer evaluations for individuals with a family history of the disease, and survivorship support. She is certified in cancer genetic risk assessment through the City of Hope, allowing her to help patients better understand inherited cancer risks and make informed decisions about screening and treatment.
In addition to treating breast cancer, Dr. Jambhekar performs surgery for melanoma, including wide local excisions and sentinel lymph node biopsies. Bayhealth said she is particularly passionate about expanding access to specialized cancer care in underserved communities.
On her Bayhealth physician profile, Dr. Jambhekar said her decision to pursue surgical oncology was driven by a desire to combine evidence-based medicine with meaningful patient relationships.
“I chose surgical oncology because I wanted to work in a field that is strongly evidence-based, allows me to perform a wide variety of surgeries and gives me the opportunity to build a practice that empowers women,” she said. “Supporting patients through some of the most pivotal moments in their lives is a privilege which inspires my work every day.”
She said one of the most rewarding aspects of her career comes after surgery.
“One of the most fulfilling moments in my career is making the call after surgery to tell a patient they are now cancer-free. Sharing their joy and celebration reminds me why this specialty is my purpose.”
Dr. Jambhekar earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, completed a general surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and went on to complete a fellowship in surgical breast oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Jambhekar enjoys photography, writing, hiking and creating online educational content. She recently relocated to Delaware with her husband and their two Siamese cats.
Dr. Jambhekar sees patients at Bayhealth Breast & Surgical Oncology, Sussex Campus, located at 101 Wellness Way, Third Floor, Milford, and performs surgeries at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus.
