The Riverwalk Farmer’s Market will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year when the market opens on May 3rd. Downtown Milford Inc., who manages the market each year, has planned a ribbon cutting at 9:30 AM that day to mark the occasion. The market will run Saturdays from May 3rd until December 20th from 9 AM until Noon along the Riverwalk on Walnut Street in Milford.
“We have also learned from the Department of Agriculture that we are the longest running market in Delaware,” Shelby DiCostanzo, chairman of the Riverwalk Farmer’s Market, said. “That is absolutely something we want to celebrate.”
This year, the market will begin focusing on a health and wellness experience with various programs planned over the course of the market. Tai-chi will be offered on May 3rd and there are plans to offer yoga as well.
“We would love to provide some healthy cooking lessons as well and are working on a plan for that,” DiCostanzo said. “Because we are an art town, we do have local artisans selling handcrafted items at the market. In addition to fresh produce, we also have vendors with natural products, including bug spray, soaps and more.”
The Riverwalk Farmer’s Market began in 1995 after the formation of Downtown Milford Inc., who obtained a grant to kick off the official market. Prior to the formal establishment, farmers would pull their trucks up along the river to sell excess items. Downtown Milford Inc. partnered with the City of Milford who agreed to allow the organization to use a portion of the Riverwalk.
“At the kickoff event, we will have live music playing by the Santa House,” DiCostanzo said. “We also hope to recognize a few people who were there from the beginning and helped create the market we see today.”
Anyone who was involved in the early years of the market is encouraged to reach out to Downtown Milford Inc. by emailing [email protected]. Downtown Milford Inc. is trying to compile a history of the market and would like to recognize those who were there from the beginning.
