To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the Milford Museum’s American History Series will feature a program about Eliza Schuyler Hamilton presented by Trish Chambers on Saturday, July 11, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in Milford, Delaware. The program “Behind Every Great Man” refers to the popular quote “behind every great man is a strong woman. Although there is debate over who first made the statement, it has become a cultural proverb and definitely applies to Alexander Hamilton.
While history holds Mr. Hamilton in the highest esteem it overlooks the brilliant woman who stood by him through the best and worst times of his life. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton was a strong, intelligent, and loyal wife who lived in the shadow of Alexander Hamilton for twenty-four years. Meet the woman who after his death went on to make her own mark on American history.

The life of Eiza Hamilton is fascinating. She was raised in a society that felt women were weak, yet she was able to guide one of the greatest Americans in our history to success and then go on to contribute so much on her own after his death leaving a legacy that carries on today. Outliving him by 50 years, Eliza faced severe financial strain and unimaginable grief after his death during the famous duel with Aaron Burr. Yet, she was able to save their family home, Hamilton Grange, and dedicated her life to philanthropy while also cementing her husband’s historical legacy.
Trish Chambers’ unique and energetic presentation style combines both humor and realism. She has appeared on TV for the History Channel, on radio, and in the movie Gods and Generals. The author of two non-fiction books: “Civil War Women: Their Roles and Legacies” and “Lighthouses of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge,” Chambers’ diligence in producing authenticated, historically accurate, and thoroughly researched presentations led her to being invited to speak at National Parks, schools, libraries, historical societies, colleges, and senior facilities along the Eastern Seaboard. The New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate recognized her for participation in the Orange County Rehabilitation Support Services Speakers Forum.
Sponsored by the Milford Museum, these monthly programs focus on a variety of topics concerning local, state, and national history. These presentations are held on the second Saturday of each month, at 1:00 p.m., in the Milford Public Library. The library is located at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford, Delaware.
