Abbott’s Mill kicks off spring in April with the return of a few popular programs. There are programs available for children and adults, some with no registration fee.
The Knee-High Naturalist program returns on Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 AM. Each week, there is a different theme with April 16 featuring “Earth Day,” April 23 featuring “Are You My Mother?” and April 30 featuring “The Sun.” The program features hikes, observations and fun learning activities for children aged two to five. Pre-registration is required and parents must attend with the child. It is rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately. Register on the Abbott’s Mill website. The cost is $15.
Weekly nature walks are also planned on Wednesdays in April. Each week highlights a different theme as experienced staff members guide the walks. Topics include, but are not limited to winter tree identification, lichen biodiversity, bees and pollinators and more. Registration is required and the cost is $15. The annual horseshoe crab spawning survey volunteer training will take place on Saturday, April 19 from 1 to 2 PM. Volunteers will learn details on the annual horseshoe crab spawning survey held in May and June. Ages five and up are able to join the program which is free, but registration is required. Abbott’s Mill Nature Center is a 376-acre Milford Millponds Nature Preserve featuring beautiful trails along a man-made millpond with a working feed mill. There is a handicap-accessible boardwalk that meanders along a clear coastal plain stream, open meadows and a Garden for Wildlife idea garden. There is a picnic area as well.
The gristmill is currently on hold while it undergoes repairs, but its water source is part of the rich history of the area. Trails are pet friendly. Quest kayaks are not available this year but the visitor center offer a live animal collection and taxidermy animal display. There is also a public boat ramp for personal motorboats, kayaks and canoes. Fishing si permitted and regulated by Delaware Fish and Wildlife. A fishing permit is required for anyone 16 to 64.
