The Friends of Killen’s Pond will hold their inaugural Killen’s Pond Festival on Saturday, May 9 from 11 AM to 4 PM. The event is designed to benefit the park.
“Killen’s Pond Festival is a lively, family-friendly outdoor celebration featuring live music, local vendors, breweries and activities for all ages,” organizers said. “It is a day of community connection, great food and gathering for a cause.”
Proceeds from the event will go to benefit a bike repair station and campground playground improvements at Killen’s Pond. The event will include a beer garden, Kid Zone, food trucks and live music. Activities will be at the Sports Complex area. The festival is free but park fees are required.
Located in Felton, Killen’s Pond is a centered on 66-acres along a millpond established in the late 1700s. It features a waterpark that opens Memorial Day to Labor Day, boat rentals that include kayaks, canoes and pedal boats, hiking trails, a nature center and a campground.
Killen’s Pond was created when the Murderkill River was dammed to power grist and sawmills. Named for George W. Killen who owned the land around 1838, the property was the location of a mill along with residences owned by the Killen family as well as the Case family. Killen acquired the land through purchase and inheritance land previously owned by the Case family.
The land was acquired by the Delaware State Park system in 1965.
