With the new year underway, many local families are rethinking their approach to wellness. Instead of strict diets, intense fitness plans or major overhauls in lifestyle, more are choosing a path of realistic wellness habits designed to last beyond the first of the year.
“After the holidays, people are tired,” Heather Simpson, a health and wellness coach, said. “Families are realizing that extreme resolutions often lead to burnout. What works better is focusing o small, consistent changes.”
Simpson suggested that instead of dramatic transformations, like completely cutting out carbs or planning to go to the gym every day, more manageable goals are better to start. It may mean cooking at home one extra night per week, going to bed a little earlier or taking a short walk after dinner as a family.
“Plan to move more and eat less,” Simpson said. “It is really that simple. If you burn more calories than you intake, you will feel better and improve health.”
Not only are families making adjustments for their physical health, but they are also looking at mental health as well.”
“Families are asking how they can feel better, not just look better,” Simpson said. “that includes reducing screen time, improving communication and creating routines that support rest and connection.”
Set aside time for family check-ins, spend time reading or plan a screen-free evening. Instead of screens, consider board or card games, puzzles and other family events. If you feel you are always saying no to simple things like that, it may be time to start saying no to unnecessary commitments in order to slow down a bit.
Although a gym membership is beneficial, there are things you can do at home to improve health. Stretching routines can be found on YouTube or streaming services. Involve children by taking a walk, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Allowing children to watch you do a workout routine instills healthy habits in them as well.
Wellness does not mean extremes. By focusing on balance and small changes, you can begin to see health improvements in your life as well as the rest of your family.
