Even though it is cold outside, Abbott’s Mill Nature Center encourages everyone to get out and enjoy nature. In January and February, they will offer two programs that will not only help you enjoy the scenic views at the nature center but also help you learn about some of the plants that grow there.

On Saturday, January 17 and again on February 28, the center will offer two programs designed to provide you with information about nature along Abbott’s Pond. From 10 AM to Noon, Michael Valenti, Site Director, will provide fascinating details about lichens, symbiotic organisms that are found naturally in this area. The tour includes a walk of about a mile and a half.
After learning about lichens, remain at the visitor center for Winter Tree Identification on those days. That program begins at 12:30 PM and runs until 2:30 PM. Valenti will walk with you through Abbott’s Mill Nature Center trails and help you learn to identify trees during the winter without using leaf characteristics. This is a great way to learn identification techniques using buds, bark and tree branching characteristics. Bring along a tree identification field guide.
For both programs, minors must be accompanied by an adult and registration is required. The cost for each tour is $15 per person. The tours are recommended for those 13 years of age or older.
To register, visit the Abbott’s Mill Events Calendar.
