Delaware Nature Society, which manages and operates Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, needs support other than monetary donations. Like many non-profit organizations, they could use support by donations of items that help them fulfill their mission.
“As you check off your holiday shopping list this year, consider supporting Delaware Nature Society!” Michael Valenti, Director of Abbott’s Mill, said. “Our Amazon Wishlist makes it easy to shop with purpose. Every item you purchase helps a child discover nature through hands-on learning, equips our team with the tools they need to care for the land, and supports DelNature’s mission of education, conservation, and advocacy. Your generosity helps make our work possible!”
Items found on the Delaware Nature Society wish list include trail cameras to collect data using wildlife monitoring. The cameras allow them to inform management, restore habitats and teach the public. It is important to note that the cameras fall under the state’s ban for recreational cameras on public lands, focusing their efforts on private stewardship and species studies. The state banned trail cameras for recreational use on state property in 2023, but the ban allowed state agencies to continue using them for environmental purposes. Trail cameras can still be used on private property.
Another item on the wish list is a torch that would be used for controlled burns in order to manage habitats, remove invasive plants and promote native species. A large standing turtle basking platform is also included on the list which provides a dry, elevated area above a turtle tank so that it can climb out of the water to absorb heat. A heat basking spotlight is also on the list to use with the table.
A rabbit scratch toy is designed to satisfy a rabbit’s instinct to chew, dig and grind their constantly growing nails. Made from natural materials, the rabbit scratch toy would be placed in rabbit habitat areas. Youth binoculars are also on the list for Delaware Nature Center to use during children’s programs. A garden knife is also included on the list.
Although most of the items on the wish list are under $30, one trail camera is around $70. Another large item on the list are light beach wheelchairs with balloon tires. This is part of a new program at Delaware State Parks and Delaware Nature Center to offer options for the disabled to enjoy the many trails in the area. The wheelchairs can cost over $600 but are necessary to allow those who need assistance access the trails.
