This provides hunters with a variety of methods and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and helps the state manage population size. The state encourages the harvesting of does in order to maintain the quality of the deer herds in the area.
In addition to helping keep deer herds healthy, successful hunters are also encouraged ot participate in the Delaware Hunters Against Hunger program which allows them to donate venison to those in need. Successful hunters can also participate in the Delaware Hunters Against Hunger program, donating venison to those in need. This program provides thousands of pounds of venison to a food distribution hub. All donated deer are processed into ground venison, free of charge. The meat is distributed to participating charitable groups. The program only accepts deer harvested and registered in Delaware.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s (DNREC) Division of Fish and Wildlife offers detailed information on regulations related to deer hunting, including Sunday hunting rules. As long as a hunger has landowner permission to hunt on private property and designated public lands, deer, waterfowl and gamebirds can be hunted. Maps and rules for each area, including Sunday hunting information, are available online.
In order to hunt in Delaware, individuals must have a Delaware hunting license or a License Exempt Number (LEN). Anyone born after January 1, 1967, must complete a basic hunter education course to obtain a hunting license. Delaware hunters have a range of options depending on the season and equipment used. Archery and crossbow season began September 1 and runs through February 1. Archery and crossbow equipment may be used to hunt deer during firearm or muzzleloader season provided they wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange on the head, chest and back.
Muzzleloader season will run again from January 26 through February 1. The first season ended October 19. The weapon must be loaded from the muzzle with approved propellant. Scopes are permitted. General firearm season ended November 23 but will return January 17 through 25. This season is for shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns, authorized straight-walled pistol-caliber rifles and archery or crossbow equipment.
A special anterless only season will be held December 13 through 21 and all listed firearm or archer weapons are permitted. However, during this season, archery and crossbow users may also take antlered deer.
January 3 as well as January 5 through 10, handguns and straight-walled pisto-caliber rifles may be used. Straight-walled rifles are also authorized. However, this season is closed in Zones 1A and 1B with Sunday, January 4 excluded.
Only two antlered deer may be harvested per license year across all methods and seasons. There is no limit on antlerless deer provided a hunter has an antlerless deer tag in possession. Scopes are allowed on shotguns, muzzleloaders, crossbows, and straight-walled rifles.
With its long season, wide range of hunting methods, and robust regulations, Delaware remains a top destination for both recreational and conservation-minded hunters.
