At a recent meeting, Milford City Council approved a donation of $1,600 to the Buccaneer Foundation. The funding will be for two tables at the November 8 Fall Fling which is a fundraiser for the organization. Because he is on the board of the foundation, Mayor Todd Culotta recused himself, requiring Vice-Mayor Jason James to step in.
“Every dollar goes to education and educational enhancement,” James said. “Tables are $800 and not that the past dictates the future, but the city has partnered with the Milford School District on other things. This would not be unusual.”
The foundation requested that the city purchase one table at a cost of $800. Councilman Dan Marabello asked where the funding would come from, and James stated that they first had to decide if council wanted to do it. Councilwoman Lori Connor asked if the city could do more than $800.
“If there is one table and it seats eight, that would be all of council with no invited guests. There is no room for anyone else,” James said.
Connor pointed out that it would be difficult to make a motion without knowing there were funds available.
“It looks like there are funds available in the council budget,” Finance Director Lou Vitola said. “That is the account we have typically used when we attend functions like SCAT and Delaware League and others. There was $30,000 budgeted in 2026 which is consistent with prior years and there is still close to that available after three months.”
James asked what council wanted to do.
“At the retreat, we talked about what we could do to help the school system,” Marabello said. “We were thinking more money, but this could be an indication that we want to help. It could be the start of showing that interest.”
The Fall Fling will be held at Chorman’s Hangar, located at 2057 Nine Foot Road in Greenwood from 5 to 9 PM. There will be live music, food and drinks with all proceeds going to the foundation. For ticket prices or sponsorship information, email the foundation.
Council approved a motion to purchase two tables at the event with a vote of six to zero.
