Milford Public Library will celebrate Delaware Literacy Day on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM. They are inviting families and readers of all ages to enjoy an afternoon filled with activities that highlight the joy and importance of reading.
“We are excited to welcome Read Aloud Delaware and Representative Bryan Shupe to help us celebrate literacy day,” Lea Rosell, Executive Director of the library said. “We are especially excited to welcome the Tonies company. There will be free family activities, giveaways and hands-on demonstrations of the Toniebox 2.”
Shupe, who has been an outspoken about the importance of reading to and encouraging children to read, posted on social media to promote the event.
“National Literacy Day may have been observed last month, but any day is a good day to encourage kids to read,” Shupe posted. “Join us at the library as the Tonies make a local stop on their national tour.”
The Toniebox is a screen-free, audio-storytelling device with hand-painted, magnetic figurines used with their audio player. Placing a content Tonie on the Toniebox starts playing pre-loaded content, while a Creative Tonie allows parents to upload their own custom audio through the mytonies app. The device is designed to encourage independent, interactive playtime that fosters imagination and cognitive development without the use of screens.
“Proponents say it’s a good tool to help children develop a love of reading, spark their imagination and reduce screen time during a crucial stage of their development,” Shupe posted. “It is designed to benefit children between three and eight.”
