Abbott’s Mill will hold their Fall Native Plant Sale on October 4 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. There is no charge to attend the plant sale. Native plants create visual beauty and provide food and shelter for wildlife.
Native plants enhance biodiversity and conserve water as they are adapted to the local soil and weather. This means they require less maintenance, pesticides or fertilizer. Some of the native plants found in southern Delaware include flowering dogwood, red maple, spicebush, black-eyed Susan, Virginia bluebells, woodland phlox and swamp milkweed.
Fall mums, which are very popular this time of year, are actually not native to the area. Many you find have been bred to survive the cold but are considered annuals. Some alternatives include asters, goldenrod and white snakeroot. If you enjoy mums in the fall, it is recommended that you leave them in pots and not plant them in gardens.
After the plant sale, members of the Delaware Nature Society can take a guided hike along the scenic trails of the nature center. The tours run from Noon until 2:30 PM. After the hike, members can wind down the afternoon with a relaxing happy hour while enjoying the sights and sounds of autumn.
Registration is not required for the plant sale, but because the hike and happy hour are member’s only, registration is required. The hike and happy hour are for those 21 and older only.
