With the first week of school behind parents and students, Milford School District wanted to remind everyone of changes and details related to the new school year. With a new school opening, issues can arise that are out of the district’s control.
“We want to express our gratitude to our families and community for your patience in ironing out any bus issues,” Jon LoBiondo, Transportation Supervisor, said. “Over 100 new students registered the week before school began and this can cause problems with scheduling buses.”
The district reminds parents that even if their child did not change buses or schools, bus routes do change each year and when that many students register at the last minute, it can also impact riders who have been assigned to a bus all summer. The transportation office also received a high volume of calls and voice mails the first week of school, so they suggested emailing them with concerns at [email protected] for a quicker response. Be sure to include your child’s name, school and grade in the email.
“Walk zones at the secondary campus changed with a new crosswalk and crossing guard on Rehoboth Boulevard,” Trish Gerken, Public Information Officer, said. “This was a state change, not prompted by the district. Drivers are now required to stop for pedestrians at that crosswalk and new sidewalks are being installed to connect Washington Street to the crosswalk.”
Drivers need to remember that school is now back in session, Gerken stated. She asked that drivers slow down and stay alert, especially during arrival and dismissal times. Arrival times range from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM, depending on the school while dismissals range from 2:15 PM to 3:30 PM.
“With so many students registering at the last minute, it is taking us longer than usual to get everyone enrolled,” Gerken said. “There are state requirements we must follow to ensure the children are enrolled properly which may involve reaching out to other districts for documentation. The district is working diligently to get every child enrolled as fast as possible.”
Gerken reminded parents that school registration requires a parent or guardian to begin the process online or by making an appointment at the district office to begin the enrollment process. In order to register a student, a copy of the parent or guardian’s driver’s license or government-issued identification card is required along with proof of residence. This can be a lease, mortgage statement or utility bill stating the address where the child resides with their parent or guardian.
“We will also need a copy of their birth certificate, a recent report card or transcript, and proof of immunization,” Gerken said. “If there are custody documents, copies of those must be provided along with any individualized education plan or 504 plan. A withdrawal letter from a previous school must be provided.”
To begin the registration process online, visit the Registration page on the Milford School District website. A school locater link can be found here as well.
