Councilwoman Katrina Wilson will be recognized this weekend with a Black Girls Rock! Lifetime Achievement Award

Councilwoman Katrina Wilson who has served on Milford City Council for decades recently learned she had been nominated for a Black Girls Rock! Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, founded by Beverly Bond in 2006, honors the incredible accomplishments of black women across entertainment, business, activism and beyond.

“I am not sure who submitted my name, and I may not find out until I get to the conference,” Wilson said. “I received an email and when I first read it, I thought it was a joke. I showed it to my son, Darron, and he said “Mom! This is a big deal! You gotta contact them.” So, I did, and they told me all about it.”

City Clerk Katrina White pointed out to Wilson that she was among some very well-known people, including Cicely Tyson and Michele Obama, both of which have received the award.

“My son said it is amazing that someone from little old Milford is being recognized for this,” Wilson said. “Normally it is big, mega cities, people who have boots on the ground, maybe not as long as I have, but have more notoriety.”

Wilson will attend events on Friday and Saturday with conferences and networking planned for Friday. She explained there are empowerment meetings, and she will be introduced to some of the Black Girls Rock! Youth groups.

“Saturday is the big banquet, and we will have a sit down dinner and speakers,” Wilson said. “Each person, each honoree will get up and speak. Then, they have different categories for honorees, and I will be recognized with the lifetime achievement category.”

Wilson is excited to attend the event with her family and is humbled to be placed in a category with so many brilliant women of color.

“It’s so nice to be recognized while you’re alive,” Wilson said. “People die and then they want to name things after them. It is so nice to get the recognition now. “
