Oscar “Dick” Davis Bailey, Jr., 92, of Greenwood, passed away on July 21 at his home. A proud veteran, Bailey served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and continued his service in the Merchant Marine as well as the Coast Guard Reserve.
Born in 1933 in Slaughter Neck to the late Oscar and Mildred Savage Bailey, Bailey was also devoted to the community. He was a district commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America and many young men remember his mentorship and leadership. Bailey was awarded the Silver Beaver, a distinguished service award, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Bailey was active in the Rotary Club and a local HAM Radio Club. He found joy and peace in the outdoors, spending much of his free time hunting, fishing and hiking. Always eager to learn, when Bailey was not outside, he could be found with a book in his hand. All who knew him will remember his unwavering love for his country and his family.
In addition to his parents, Bailey was preceded in death by his wife Janet Worthington Bailey.
He leaves behind his former wife, Patricia Jopp Bailey and what he called his “greatest gift from God,” his three daughters, Susan Esham and her husband, Timmy; Carol Reed and her husband, Paul; Michele Peiffer and her husband, Shane.
Bailey was loved and admired by his grandchildren, Adam Reed and his wife, Selena; Kayla Peterman and her husband, Joel; Kelsey Snyder and her husband, Andrew; Mackenzie Reed and Rebekah Peiffer, all of whom will miss him greatly. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Isaac Peterman; his sister, Phyllis Smith; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A memorial service to honor Bailey is planned for Monday, July 28 in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home in Milford. Visitation is planned from 10 to 11 AM with a funeral service with military honors immediately following at 11 AM. Friends may leave condolences through the Guest Book on the Berry-Short Funeral home website.
