Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) began in 1977 with a group of volunteers and a board of directors with a mission to provide safe, decent affordable housing. What began with no staff now employes over 100 people and has projects throughout Delmarva. On June 10, 2025, MHDC is holding a community build day to assist with their Self-Build project.
“This program combines sweat-equity homeownership with technical assistance and affordable loans,” David Moore, CEO, said in a previous interview. “The program builds on the barn-raising tradition of rural American where families frequently contributed time to help a neighbor build structures. Families participating in the self-help program perform approximately 65 percent of the construction on the homes, which are built in groups of five.”
Benefits for those go through the Self-Build program include no down payments with rates as low as one percent. From the first day they enter the program, there is substantial sweat equity required, not just for their home but for four others who are part of their team. Various floor plans are available, and, in some cases, mortgage payments could be less than rent depending on income.
The Community Build Day is from 9 AM to 3 PM at 17066 Rye Hill Lane in Lincoln. All tools, safety equipment and lunch will be provided by MHDC. Register at the MHDC website.
