Downtown Milford Inc. recently announced that the Riverwalk Farmer’s Market was named one of the top three markets in Delaware by Delaware Online. The recognition came after a statewide poll.
“This honor does not belong to Downtown Milford, Inc.,” Executive Director Sade Truiett said. “It belongs to our incredible volunteers, amazing vendors and local shoppers who make our market such a special part of our community.”
The Riverwalk Farmer’s Market is the oldest continuously running market in the state, celebrating its 31st anniversary when it opened in May. The market runs every Saturday from the first week of May through October 31 from 8 AM to Noon. There is a pop-up fall and winter market that runs until the weekend before Christmas as well.
According to documents held by Downtown Milford Inc., the Farmer’s Market opened in July 1995 with support from the Delaware Department of Agriculture who provided a $4,000 grant as well as support from local businesses who donated over $2,200.
Prior to the official establishment of the market, local farmers would gather in an open space by the river to sell produce and other items. The Riverwalk Farmer’s Market provided a more organized system and added artisan items in keeping with the city’s “River Town, Art Town, Home Town” motto.
Sponsorships are available all year to help support the Farmer’s Market. Vendors may join the market at any time during the market with spaces available at just $15 per week.
The number one market in the state will be announced in mid-September.
