Red-Light cameras have been installed at the intersection of Dupont Boulevard and Airport Road/Northwest 10th Street as well as Dupont Boulevard and Milford Harrington Highway/Northeast-Northwest Front Street. DelDOT proposed the red-light cameras at a city council meeting in May 2025.
“Our criteria for selecting where a red-light camera is installed have not changed in nearly a decade,” Matt Buckley of DelDOT said at the meeting. “It focuses on safety first, not revenue. The initial screening is for about 1,100 signals statewide. We look at crashes related to red light running and then complete list of the top ones in the state.
At the meeting, Buckley stated that the Dupont Highway and Milford-Harrington Road intersection was a high-crash area, noting there were 129 violations in one 16-hour period. There were 62 violations in a 16-hour period at Dupont Highway and Airport Road. There was a third intersection identified, Front and Washington Street, with 50 violations in a 16-hour period, but a red-light camera has not been installed there yet.
Now that the red-light cameras are operational, there is a 30-day warning period. Motorists who run red lights during the 30-day period will receive a warning instead of a citation. After the 30-day period, a citation will be issued and the fine for violation is $137.50. This is a civil violation and will not impact the driver’s insurance rate or accumulate points on their driving record.
