Karl J. Oliver, a longtime Milford resident and former director of environmental services at Milford Memorial Hospital, died peacefully April 23, 2026, at Bayhealth Hospital Sussex Campus. He was 90.
Born June 17, 1935, in Pittston, Pennsylvania, Oliver was the only son of Arthur and Lenore Oliver and grew up among four sisters. His sister Jane once affectionately referred to him as “God’s gift to the depression.”
Oliver graduated from West Pittston High School in 1955 and began his career working alongside his father at A.W. Oliver General Contractor. In 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Baumholder, Germany, until 1960. Following his military service, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service before transitioning into the healthcare field.
In 1964, Oliver joined Newcomb Hospital in Vineland, New Jersey, where he worked in environmental services. It was there, in 1979, that he met Cynthia Mattson. The couple married in 1980 after a brief courtship.
The Olivers moved to Milford in 1981, where Oliver took on a leadership role as director of environmental services at Milford Memorial Hospital. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1997.
Oliver was known for his sense of humor and lively personality. His high school yearbook described him as having a “ready wit and infectious laughter,” qualities family members say he carried throughout his life. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as deer hunting and camping in the Pocono Mountains and later developed a love for travel, particularly cruises with his wife.
He was an active member of Milford Elks Lodge No. 2401, where he enjoyed playing cards and socializing with fellow members. He was also a dedicated sports fan, following the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Nittany Lions.
Oliver was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary McGinty and Jane Smith Landau; and sister-in-law Arlene Mattson Angelucci.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cynthia “Cyndy” Mattson Oliver; sons Patrick S. Oliver of Bend, Oregon, and Matthew J. Oliver of Millsboro; sisters Lois Forlenza of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, and Sharon Gold of Burke, Virginia; sisters-in-law Claudia and Kimberly Mattson; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
