On October 20, Victor “Butch” Elzey announced on social media that he was stepping down as a member of the Milford School District Board of Education. Elzey’s term is set to expire June 30, 2027.
“Folks, just want to let you all know that I’m stepping down from Milford School District Board of Directors. I get involved in things that I can make a difference and with my health Issues I can’t contribute, and this really breaks my heart,” Elzey posted. “You folks in Milford have got one of the best school boards, and maybe the best. All of this board’s members truly care about your children. So, I’m sorry but I’m not able to help like I want to.”
Elzey underwent a liver transplant in March 2025 and spent several months in the hospital rehabbing after his surgery. Although his health is improving, Elzey still has a long road to complete recovery which makes it difficult for him to attend board meetings.
Milford School District policy states that when there is a vacancy other than from a term expiring naturally, the board will post a public notice to call for applications from interested eligible candidates. Applicants are reviewed to verify their eligibility and then interviews are conducted by the board. After interviews, the board will vote for a replacement who will serve out the remainder of Elzey’s term.
Elzey represented District A and has served on the board since 2023. District A covers the South Bowers, the southern edge of Frederica, Knott’s Landing, Hall Estates, Dogwood Meadows, Colony West, Milford Meadows and northwestern sections within the city limits of Milford. Major roads included in Area A include Thompsonville Road, Milford Neck Road, Bay Road (Route 1), Tub Mill Pond Road, Bowman Road, Canterbury Road, Church Hill Road and Warner Road.
Applicants for Elzey’s seat must live in Area A, must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Delaware and be at least 18 years old.
