ChristianaCare is expanding access to rehabilitation services through a new partnership with Luna, a provider of in-home outpatient physical therapy, allowing patients to receive hands-on care without leaving their homes.
The new program, ChristianaCare Physical Therapy At Home, Powered by Luna, began accepting appointments in June and is designed to make physical therapy more accessible for patients who face challenges with transportation, scheduling, or attending appointments at a clinic.
Unlike virtual therapy services, the program provides one-on-one treatment from licensed physical therapists who travel directly to a patient’s home or workplace. Through Luna’s platform, patients are matched with a therapist who provides in-person sessions lasting approximately 45 to 55 minutes and continues treatment throughout the patient’s recovery plan.
“Our collaboration with Luna reflects a simple belief: If we can safely deliver high quality care in the home, we should make that option available,” said Jennifer Thomas, vice president of Rehabilitation Services at ChristianaCare. “By meeting patients where they are, we remove common barriers to care and help people stay engaged in their recovery, regain independence and remain connected to daily life.”
ChristianaCare officials said the program addresses a significant challenge in rehabilitation care. Research has shown that only about 50% to 76% of patients referred to physical therapy attend their first appointment. Travel difficulties, busy schedules and limited access to services often prevent patients from beginning treatment.
“Our focus is on timely access and helping patients get started,” Thomas said. “When care is easier to access and fits into a person’s routine, it is much more likely they will begin treatment. From there, our care teams support patients through a plan that is tailored to their needs and focused on meaningful recovery.”
The service follows an outpatient care model rather than traditional home health care. Patients do not need to be homebound to qualify, and the program is generally covered under Medicare Part B and most major insurance plans, with copays comparable to those charged for facility-based physical therapy.
ChristianaCare said the service can treat many of the same conditions addressed in its outpatient rehabilitation clinics, including orthopedic and sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, geriatric care, vestibular disorders, women’s health conditions and lymphedema.
Luna, which partners with health systems across the country, brings extensive experience in delivering outpatient physical therapy services directly to patients.
“We are proud to work with ChristianaCare to expand access to high-quality physical therapy in the home,” said Lily Beltran, co-founder and president of Luna. “Our shared focus is on removing barriers to care and delivering consistent, hands-on therapy that helps patients recover, stay engaged and achieve their goals.”
ChristianaCare officials said the addition of in-home therapy expands the health system’s rehabilitation offerings, which already include outpatient clinics, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and community-based services.
