At a recent meeting, Milford City Council approved upgrades to the First State BMX track on North Walnut Street. First State BMX leases the land from the city, and the lease requires any improvements on the property to come before council for approval.
“The structure is to protect the starting gate, and we are making an investment in the BMX track to construct the structure,” Dean Johnson of Richard Y. Johnson said. “It is basically to protect the starting gate from weather and stuff like that. I also think it will add to the facility’s appeal when it is built.”
According to Mayor Todd Culotta, Richard Y. Johnson and Sons is donating the materials and construction of the structure which is estimated to cost around $80,0000.
“We have a Gold Cup race coming up,” Culotta said. “It is a qualifier and there will be people coming in and staying at the track in campers. They are already making improvements to the track with some asphalt improvements, and we don’t have this pavilion there now, but RJY has graciously donated their resources to build it at their cost and Becker Morgan provided the plans as a donation.”
Council approved the upgrades unanimously.
According to social media posts by First State BMX, the track is getting asphalt added to section sof the track to provide a faster, better and more reliable racing surface. According to the post, the asphalt will offer faster corner speeds, greater durability in high-traffic areas, reduced maintenance concerns and “no more washouts on turn four.”
Asphalt will be installed on July 31 with the track closed for repairs and slurry application on August 1.
The State Qualifier/Gold Cup Qualifier Weekend begins Friday, August 7 with a Race for Life Double. On Saturday, August 8, a State Qualifier Double is planned with the Gold Cup Qualifier Triple planned on Sunday, August 9.
There are reserved trailer parking and pit spots available. Reserved Pit is a 10×10 marked canopy spot; premium pit is a guaranteed parking spot with area for a canopy and reserved trailer parking is also available. Before paying for a spot, the track reminds everyone to check which option they choose. No canopies are permitted on the fence , only in marked areas.
Camping is available Friday and Saturday night. When choosing a spot, select tent or note the size of the camper you will bring. Preferred spots can be added, but they are not guaranteed.
