The Milford Public Library is inviting residents of all ages to take part in a packed schedule of educational programs, family activities and community events throughout the second half of July, offering everything from local author meet-and-greets and CPR instruction to nature walks, magic shows and hands-on workshops.
Located at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford, the library’s lineup includes programs designed specifically for children, teens and adults, with several family-friendly events welcoming participants across multiple age groups.
The first programs begin Friday, July 17, when both children and teens will have an opportunity to explore Delaware’s Revolutionary War history through Road to Liberty, an interactive board game developed by the Delaware Public Archives. Designed to introduce players to Delaware’s role in the American Revolution using historical documents from the Archives’ collections, the game offers an engaging way to learn local history. Registration is required, and parents are asked to register only participating children. Teen sessions are open to students ages 12 to 18 and registration is required for them as well.
The library will welcome readers and writers alike on Saturday, July 18, during its Local Author Sign & Sell beginning at 11 a.m. The event will feature authors representing children’s, young adult and adult literature, giving visitors an opportunity to meet Delaware writers, purchase signed books and learn more about the creative process. Featured children’s authors include Melanie Figueroa, Paul Stern, Sia Willie, Jennifer Richter and Adriana Romero Camacho. Young adult authors Kelly Lidji and A. Derstine will also participate, along with adult authors Lara Buckheit, Willow Asteria, Lee Ann Walling, TJ West, Lucia Catherine and KL Montgomery.
Adults can remain at the library following the author event for a CPR Basics seminar beginning at noon. Presented in partnership with CPR Delmarva LLC, the program covers CPR, AED use and choking relief techniques for adults, children and infants. Library officials note that while participants will receive lifesaving instruction, the class does not provide CPR certification. Registration is required.
Nature enthusiasts of all ages will have the opportunity to visit Slaughter Beach on Tuesday, July 21, during a guided nature walk presented with the American Littoral Society. Participants will learn about Delaware Bay’s unique coastal ecosystem, including horseshoe crabs, local wildlife and beach conservation efforts while enjoying birdwatching and beachcombing. Registration is required for the excursion.
Children and teens can return to the library on Wednesday, July 22, for Discovering Magic with Ran’D Shine, an interactive performance combining storytelling, comedy and illusion to encourage reading and spark imagination.
The library’s teen programming continues on Thursday, July 23, with Squid Dissection: From Ink to Pen, presented in partnership with the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum, offering students ages 12 to 18 a hands-on look at marine science.
Younger builders can participate in LEGO Club on Tuesday, July 28, at 5:30 p.m. Children ages 6 and older will receive an individual LEGO set to create their own designs. Registration is required.
Teen programming wraps up with two creative workshops. On Wednesday, July 29, teens can make their own Dino Nugget Plushies, learning basic sewing or hot glue techniques while creating a unique keepsake. No registration is required for that program.
The month concludes on Friday, July 31, with DIY Amber Fossil Soap, where teens will embed insects into soap molds to create fossil-inspired soaps. Because the project requires approximately 90 minutes to dry, library staff ask participants to arrive close to the program’s start time. Registration is required, and the workshop is not designed as a drop-in event.
Library officials remind families that all teen programs are limited to students ages 12 to 18 unless otherwise noted. They also ask registered participants who cannot attend to cancel at least 24 hours in advance so waitlisted patrons may participate. Missing two registered programs without notice may result in a temporary suspension of registration privileges.
