Milford School District Board of Education recognized outstanding spring sports at a recent meeting. The board felt the district should be proud of the accomplishments of all the Milford High and Middle School sports teams.
“As head coach, I know for girls’ soccer, I am incredibly proud of what our girls did this season and accomplished,” Scott Myers, coach for the team, said. “While wins and losses are a part of athletics, what we’re proud of was that it went a lot beyond that this year. True measure of growth to me, is we see our students grow as leaders, teammates, and represent the school community.
Myers pointed out that it was his first season as coach and was incredibly proud the team went six and nine.
“Not only did we do it with such a young team with a lot of underclassmen playing,” Myers said. “We doubled our wins from the previous two seasons combined, which we really sold to the girls at that, even though it might not have looked so positive, it was incredible growth for them. What we were more proud of, we emphasize the culture that was going on: teamwork, respect, continuous improvement, and accountability, but also strong focus on the academic side of things, a large emphasis on the fact that they’re students, and then athletes.”
Myers shared that 13 of the student athletes earned honor roll that season and that the coaches were especially proud of five students who earned special recognition. Aubrey Jones was an All-Conference Honorable Mention who also served as team captain. Lucy Burk earned second team All-Conference and Haley Simon earned academic All-Conference. Kara Calvert also earned academic All-Conference.
“The criteria for that is you have to be a varsity athlete, have to earn all A’s, no B’s in the third marking period,” Myers said. “Markia Lee was our senior captain, and she was our representation in the Blue and Gold game, playing with top seniors across the state of Delaware this past weekend. So, these girls exemplify what we strive for in our program, both in the classroom and on the field. They’ve helped set the standard of our program moving forward.”
Myers thanked the Board of Education, the district, the school administration, faculty, families and community for their support of the student athletes. He also congratulated all of them who participated in spring sports.
“This actually is my second-year coaching girls lacrosse. Last year was my first year, and each year we progressively get better,” Megan Fry, coach for girls’ lacrosse said. “This was the first-year girls’ lacrosse have made it to the second round in the state tournament for the first time in the history, and then this is the first time that we actually had a player make All State and All American. So, we had a senior, Isabel Betts, make first team midfield for all conference, junior Molly Masten in second team, junior Kate Joseph made second team, and then we had an eighth grader make honorable mention as well. We had Madison Stahl make Academic All-American, and I think that’s one of the first times in the history of Milford sports. We had Isabel Betts make All State again. So, I’m just overall proud of these girls, their dedication, they’re actually playing right now. All of them right now are playing. That’s why nobody could come, but we’re super proud of them and excited for next year.”
Superintendent Travis Moorman told the board that there were many student athletes were named to All-Conference. Brandon Herman made first team for shot put and Terry Matthews for second team 300 hurdles and for boys’ lacrosse. Ty Mackert was named first team midfield and All-State team midfield. Mackert was also named USA Lacrosse All American.
Ryan Deveraux was named second team defense and All-State Honorable mention. Landon Hill was named second team goalie and James Solly received an honorable mention along with an All-State honorable mention. Dominic Ortiz received honorable mention for golf.
Caitlin Joseph received a second team attack recognition and Molly Masten for second team defense. Morgan Solheimer received an honorable mention for All-Conference. She also was recognized for her softball successes. Briella Salisbury was recognized as second team pitcher, Adriana Fountain for second team outfield and Iliane Felix Abad an honorable mention. Colton Webb was named honorable mention for All-Conference.
“We are so very proud of these athletes,” Moorman said. “They worked hard in the spring and spring is a hard time as there is a lot going on at school with athletics and academics. Many congratulations to our athletes. We also want to thank our coaches for the time they spend supporting the athletes. They certainly do not do it for the money, but they do it for the passion.”
