Birdwatchers, paddlers, and nature enthusiasts will once again have the opportunity to explore one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most ecologically unique regions during the upcoming Songbirds of the Swamp event, scheduled for June 12–14 in and around Snow Hill. Organized through Delmarva Birding Weekends in partnership with the Lower Shore Land Trust and Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum, the weekend event offers participants a chance to experience the diverse birdlife and natural habitats of Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.
The program focuses on the rich ecosystems surrounding the Pocomoke River and Nassawango Creek, areas known for their cypress swamps, hardwood forests, wetlands, and coastal habitats. Guided field trips by canoe, kayak, and foot will take participants deep into landscapes that provide important breeding and migratory habitat for dozens of bird species during late spring and early summer.
Organizers say the event is designed not only for experienced birders, but also for beginners interested in learning more about the region’s natural environment. Trips are intentionally kept relatively small to allow for closer wildlife observation and instruction from experienced guides.
One of the major draws of the event is the opportunity to observe neotropical migratory songbirds that return to Delmarva each spring to breed. Among the most sought-after species in the Snow Hill area are the colorful Prothonotary Warbler, often seen nesting in swamp forests along the Pocomoke River, and the Worm-eating Warbler, which inhabits wooded uplands near Nassawango Creek. Birders may also encounter species such as the Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Vireo, Acadian Flycatcher, and the brilliantly colored Scarlet Tanager.
The swamp forests of Worcester and Wicomico counties are especially important habitat for species that prefer mature bottomland forests and wet woodland ecosystems. During early morning paddling excursions, participants often hear the echoing songs of Barred Owl and Pileated Woodpecker drifting through the cypress stands. Organizers note that the region’s unique mix of northern and southern habitats creates an unusually diverse bird population compared to many other Mid-Atlantic locations.
In addition to inland forest birds, the event also includes excursions into the nearby Chincoteague Bay watershed, where participants will search coastal marshes and tidal habitats for species adapted to saltwater environments. Common sightings in these areas may include Clapper Rail, Saltmarsh Sparrow, Glossy Ibis, and a variety of egrets and herons feeding in shallow wetlands.
The weekend also highlights the cultural and culinary traditions of the Eastern Shore. Participants will have the opportunity to sample Chincoteague Bay oysters provided by Baywater Seafood while learning about the relationship between healthy estuaries, oyster restoration, and bird habitat conservation.
