More than 70 participants are set to rappel down a 17-story building in downtown Wilmington next week as part of a fundraiser supporting Special Olympics Delaware.
The 15th annual “Over the Edge” event will take place Thursday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 300 Delaware Avenue. Participants will descend 222 feet down the side of the building after raising a minimum of $1,250 each to support the organization’s programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Organizers say the event has become one of the nonprofit’s most recognizable fundraisers, combining adventure with community support. Since its inception, Over the Edge has raised more than $1.9 million to help fund year-round sports training, competitions and inclusion initiatives across the state.
“Over the Edge brings people together in a powerful way,” said Lisa Smith, vice president of marketing and development for Special Olympics Delaware. “Every participant who takes on this challenge is helping create opportunities, confidence, and inclusion for our athletes. Their courage and commitment reflect the extraordinary community that surrounds and supports Special Olympics Delaware.”
The event will also be streamed live throughout the day on the organization’s YouTube channel, allowing supporters to follow along as participants make their descent. In previous years, many from the Milford area have participated in the event.
Brandywine Realty Trust is serving as the host site sponsor, while TD Bank is the festival sponsor.
