Residents with unused bicycles are encouraged to give them a new purpose as Free Bikes 4 Kidz Delaware, in partnership with Bayhealth, prepares to host a statewide bike drive on Saturday, May 2.
The Free Bikes 4 Kidz Delaware event will run from 9 a.m. to noon, inviting the public to donate gently used bikes that will be refurbished and distributed to children and teens in need throughout the region. Organizers say the effort is part of a broader mission to promote healthier lifestyles and expand access to outdoor recreation for underserved youth.
The local drop-off sites for the event will include three Bayhealth locations in central and southern Delaware: Bayhealth Orthopedics in Dover, the Nemours Building at Bayhealth Sussex Campus in Milford, and Bayhealth Total Care in Milton. At each location, Free Bikes 4 Kidz volunteers will be stationed in parking lots to accept donations through a simple drive-up process, and donors will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
Since launching two years ago, Free Bikes 4 Kidz Delaware has distributed more than 1,300 bikes to children across central and southern Delaware. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and community partnerships, working with local youth-serving groups to identify children who would benefit most. Donated bikes are repaired as needed, paired with a new helmet, and given to recipients at no cost. Any unusable parts are recycled, helping keep waste out of landfills.
“Supporting Free Bikes 4 Kidz Delaware reflects our commitment to healthy families and healthy kids,” said Bayhealth Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Community Outreach Amanda Bowie. “When we help children get active early, we’re setting them up to thrive for life.”
Organizers say the program goes beyond simply providing bikes. It creates opportunities for children to stay active, build confidence, and spend more time outdoors. Health experts continue to emphasize the importance of physical activity for young people, noting that regular exercise, such as biking, supports both physical and mental well-being. Encouraging children to get outside and engage in activities like cycling can help reduce screen time, improve cardiovascular health, and foster independence which is the motivation behind Free Bikes 4 Kidz events.
Community members are encouraged to donate bikes of all sizes and styles, including those for adults, as they can be repurposed for older teens. Officials say each donation helps expand access to safe, healthy recreation for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
