The US Post Office Stamp Out Hunger Drive will take place on May 9 throughout the country. The drive has mail carriers collecting non-perishable food items in the largest one-day food drive in the country. At a recent council meeting, Mayor Todd Culotta read a proclamation for the event.
“Whereas, every year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect nonperishable food as part of the nation’s largest one-day food drive, distributing the donations to local food banks; and whereas, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is just one example of how letter carriers work to make a difference in the lives of those they serve,” Culotta read. “Since the pilot drive, held in 1991, more than 1.94 billion pounds of food has been collected; and whereas, we recognize the letter carriers within the City of Milford and all letter carriers for their hard work and their commitment to their communities. All of the food collected in our community stays in our community and we support carriers’ efforts to help those in need in our community; and WHEREAS, we also recognize the noteworthy milestone of 34 years that the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive celebrates in 2026.”
Culotta continued with the proclamation.
“Now, therefore, I, F. Todd Culotta, Mayor of the City of Milford, on behalf of the residents and City Council, do hereby proclaim the 9th day of May 2026 as Letter Carriers’ Food Drive Day in the City of Milford and urge all citizens of our community to support the food drive by placing non-perishable food items in or near your mailbox on food drive day,” Culotta said. “Your letter carrier will pick it up while delivering the mail—and together, we can all help to feed our hungry.”
To participate, residents are asked to place a can or box of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before mail is delivered on May 9. The carrier will pick up the items and return them to the post office where they will be sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry.
