Dennis L. Schafer, a U.S. Air Force veteran and longtime Milford resident known for his dedication to family, faith, and community, died Saturday, March 21, 2026, at his home. He was 88.
Born in Woodworth, North Dakota, Schafer was the son of the late Samuel T.R. Schafer and Sophia (Schelske) Heizelman, and stepson of William Heizelman. He served in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic, working on C-124 aircraft. During his military service, he was stationed in the African Congo for three months, an experience that reflected his commitment to serving his country.
Following his military service, Schafer built a long career at Kraft Foods in Dover, where he worked as a packaging maintenance mechanic. He remained with the company until his retirement in June 1997, earning respect for his reliability and strong work ethic.
Schafer was a member of Living Hope Ministries in Milford and was known for his quiet devotion to his faith and community. Outside of work, he enjoyed hunting, was a dedicated fan of sprint car racing, and found simple joy in watching and feeding birds in his yard.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Georgeanne (Ford) Schafer; his daughter, Darla Schafer; and his son, Darren Schafer and his wife Julie. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Brenna K. Schafer (Bryan), Kaitlyn A. Schafer (Anthony), and Reid W. Schafer (Nola), as well as his brother Leo W. Schafer (Geraldine) and sister Jennell Heizelman (Marvin), along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his brother Arlo D. Schafer, stepbrother Jerry Heizelman, and stepsisters Vida Petersen, Bernice Faul, and Verla Faul.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Lofland Funeral Home. Burial will be private in North Dakota.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the AMC Museum Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
